FDA Approves Drug to Improve Functional Capacity and Symptoms in Adults with Rare Inherited Heart Condition

 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) approved Myqorzo (aficamten) tablets to treat adults with symptoms obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy ( oHCM ) to improve functional capacity and symptoms. Symptomatic oHCM is an inherited condition where patients have thickened heart muscle and reduced blood flow from the left side of the heart to the rest of the body, causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and potentially life-threatening cardiac events. The effectiveness and safety of Myqorzo were studied in 282 adults with symptomatic oHCM randomly assigned to receive Myqorzo or placebo for 24 weeks. At the end of the study, participants receiving Myqorzo had an increase in exercise capacity measured by peak oxygen uptake compared to no change in exercise capacity among those receiving placebo. Approvals are for uncomplicated urogenital gonorrhea The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved two new oral medicines to treat a common sexually transmitted infection called gonorrhea. The FDA approved approved Nuzolvence (zoliflodacin) granules that dissolve in water. This medicine can treat uncomplicated urogenital gonorrhea in adults and children 12 years and older who weigh at least 77 pounds. The FDA also approved Blujepa (gepotidacin) oral tablets for the same condition in patients 12 years and older who weigh at least 99 pounds. This medicine is for patients who have few or no other treatment choices because of limited clinical safety data. Blujepa was first approved in March 2025 to treat urinary tract infections . FDA Approves First Gene Therapy Treatment for Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) has approved Waskyra ( etuvetidigene autotemcel ), the first cell-based gene therapy for the treatment of Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome (WAS). Waskyra is indicated for pediatric patients six months and older and adults with WAS who have a mutation in the WAS gene and for whom hematopoietic stem cell transportation (HSCT) is appropriate and no suitable human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched related stem cell donor is available. The application was granted Orphan Drug , Rare Pediatric Disease and Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy designations. The FDA granted approval of Waskyra to Fondazione Telethon ETS . This is a first approved cell and gene therapy product from a non-product applicant.
