How Recalled Nestle and Danone Products Affect Children

Health authorities are currently investigating reports that dozens of infants have fallen ill after the recall of contaminated baby formula batches from Nestlé and Danone

The recalls were triggered by the discovery of cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin produced by Bacillus cereus that can cause rapid onset of nausea, severe vomiting, and abdominal cramps.

Key Details of the Recall

Affected Brands: Recalls involve specific batches of Nestlé (SMA, Alfamino, NAN) and Danone (Aptamil, Cow & Gate, Milumil).

Contamination Source: The issue was traced to a shared third-party ingredient supplier, identified as providing contaminated arachidonic acid (ARA) oil, a nutrient intended to support brain and eye development.

Reported Illnesses: As of February 2026, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is investigating 36 suspected cases of poisoning in infants who consumed the affected batches.

Global Impact: While the investigations are heavily focused on the UK and Europe (including France, Germany, and Austria), the Nestlé voluntary recall has impacted products in over 60 countries.

What Parents Should Do

Check Batch Codes: Parents are urged to immediately verify if they have any of the recalled products by checking batch numbers and expiry dates against lists provided by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) or Nestlé's official advisory.

Stop Use Immediately: If a batch matches the recall list, stop using it immediately and switch to an alternative.

Seek Medical Advice: If your baby has consumed the formula and shows symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea, contact your GP or local health service (such as NHS 111 in the UK).

Product Returns: Affected tins can typically be returned to the point of purchase for a full refund, often with or without a receipt.
