NAFDAC Seals Warehouses: Protecting Nigerian Consumers From Expired and Counterfeit Products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has been actively sealing warehouses across Nigeria, uncovering large quantities of expired, counterfeit, and substandard food, drugs, and other regulated products. 

In a recent operation, NAFDAC sealed 18 warehouses in Niger State, discovering products worth over N100 million, including expired non-alcoholic beverages, dairy milk, candies, bottled water, and pasta.

NAFDAC's mandate is to protect public health by ensuring that only safe and quality products are available in Nigerian markets. 

The agency conducts regular inspections and raids to remove expired, counterfeit, and substandard products from circulation. Warehouses are sealed when they fail to meet NAFDAC's storage and distribution guidelines, posing a risk to consumer health.

NAFDAC had earlier operated in Lagos, Kaduna and now in Niger State. In Lagos, it intercepted and seized counterfeit malaria medicines worth N1.2 million.  In Kaduna State, it shut down a depot and drinks factory for poor hygiene and storage practices. 

NAFDAC provides guidelines for warehouse inspection, storage, and distribution of regulated products. These guidelines ensure that products are stored under proper conditions, minimizing the risk of contamination or expiration. Warehouse operators must adhere to these guidelines to avoid penalties, including sealing of facilities.

NAFDAC advises consumers to:

- Check expiry dates before purchasing products.

- Report suspicious products or storage facilities to NAFDAC.

- Only purchase products from authorized retailers.
