The New York Times reported that a 32-year-old mother of three was trapped in a hospital in northern Cameroon for four months due to an outdated tuberculosis treatment approach

She was isolated from her children and confined to a small room with other patients, despite the World Health Organization's guidelines recommending against isolation unless patients are acutely ill. 

This was described as an obsolete practice that has persisted in some low-income countries due to limited resources and lack of international funding.

Tuberculosis (TB) treatment has undergone significant advancements in recent years, with experts recommending shorter, safer, and more effective regimens. 

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Thoracic Society (ATS), modern TB treatment focuses on personalized approaches, taking into account drug susceptibility, patient health, and disease severity.

Tuberculosis (TB) prevention is crucial to reducing the global burden of this infectious disease. 

The following prevention strategies can help protect vulnerable populations, reduce transmission, and ultimately contribute to TB elimination:

Vaccination

The Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine is widely used to prevent severe TB in children. While its efficacy varies, BCG vaccination has been shown to reduce TB incidence and mortality in vaccinated populations [1].

Latent TB Infection Treatment

Treating latent TB infection (LTBI) is critical to preventing active TB. Recommended regimens include:
