Free Wegovy, a Weight-Loss Drug, to over 1 Million People in UK

The UK's National Health Service (NHS) will offer free Wegovy, a weight-loss jab, to over 1 million people in England at risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends the weekly injection as an "extra layer of protection" for those with existing heart issues or serious circulation problems in their legs, alongside a healthy diet and exercise.

Wegovy, also known as semaglutide, has shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes by 20% in clinical trials.

Benefits were seen before significant weight loss occurred, suggesting the drug works directly on the heart and blood vessels. The treatment will be available to those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 27 or higher.

The NHS expects to begin rollout this summer, with patients able to self-administer the drug at home using a special pen injector device.

While Wegovy is currently limited to two years on the NHS, experts suggest it should be considered life-long due to relapse risks.

Wegovy (semaglutide) has shown benefits beyond weight loss, including:

Reduced heart risk: 20% lower risk of heart attacks and strokes in clinical trials.

Improved cardiovascular health: It benefits seen before significant weight loss, suggesting direct impact on heart and blood vessels.

Appetite suppression: It mimics GLP-1 hormone, helping users feel fuller.

Weight loss aid: It helps with weight management alongside diet and exercise.
